Charlton Manor discuss leadership

Last Friday Charlton Manor’s task force of year 5’s got together to experiment with what it meant to be a good leader and decide on the Eco Action. The visiting ISS astro-scientists were impressed by their findings.

What makes a good leader?

” A good influence. Perseverance. Responsible. Kind. Understanding. Forgiving.”

“Someone who pushes you/people to their limits.”

“Respect others. Good decisions.”

“Include everyone’s opinions”

“Determination.”

“Courage”

“Trustworthy”

“Good communication (eye contact, hand signals, very loud voice)”

“Supporting each other”

What would you add?

I look forward to meeting them again next week to put their sign together and see how they are using their leadership skills to get their school moving!

Kidbrooke - Signs of Change

Tash and I were bowled over by the creativity and enthusiasm of the staff and young people at Kidbrooke School. Our first day of making the sign was filled with making props and some very impressive movement work. The school had worked really hard and collected a vast amount of interesting recyclable materials for us to utilise!

Cardwell - Signs of Change

Sid and I were mightily impressed over our 2 days at Cardwell at the focus and ingenuity we found. It took a huge amount of Pupil and Teacher patience to create a unified sign with 2 classes! The Lab assistants from Corelli school were an invaluable help and we soon created some movement ideas incorporating their initial sketches of a house, a lightbulb, a computer and plugs and sockets. I cannot wait for our final “Ritual of Beginnings” in a few weeks!

The Beginning

Taking part in Signs of Change has been a truly rewarding experience with our year 7 students really engaging in the making of the sign to deliver their promise and vision for George Green’s school.  “Sign” day marked our ritual of beginnings, which has helped to re-lauch the schools Eco-Team, where as a result of this project, will now be lead by Alexis Mehmet, Jack Bell and Jordan Barker, our Champions!

“If you want people to help the environment then you have to make it fun for them”

If you’ve been busy working on a Signs of Change project over the recent weeks, you might’ve spotted members of the Signs of Change Research Team popping up to chat to you during your workshops. We’re Hannah and Helen and we’ve spent the last few weeks visiting all ten schools taking part in the project to chat to taskforces, teachers and artists about their Sign of Change activity: why they’ve chosen their sign, how they’ve worked together to build it and what it means to them, their fellow pupils and the wider world. We’ve seen some fantastic Signs – from a giant tap at Queen Elizabeth Girls to a human caterpillar at Thomas Arnold, to mention just two – and heard some even more fantastic comments. It’s been great to see the enthusiasm, hard work and commitment to making a positive eco impact that’s gone in to each of projects and we’ve been really impressed by how the Champions and taskforces have used their Making a Sign activity to start a conversation about the environment and the positive changes we can all make to help protect it. At George Green’s school, Jordan, Jack and Alexis told us that “if you want people to help the environment then you have to make it fun for them”. We think they’ve got a point, and we hope you’ve all had lots of fun making your own signs to help the environment yourselves.
